Since 2014, around 1,000 works related to modern Asian art - including nearly 150 paintings by Lê Phổ, more than 115 works by Mai Trung Thứ and nearly 100 works executed by Vũ Cao Đàm - have been sold at Aguttes. This spotlight on artists long little known to the general public is consolidated by the release in bookshops on 14 February of the book L'Art Moderne en Indochine written by expert Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier.

Collection de Nguyen Huu Hop et Nguyen Nguyet Nga, proches de la famille impériale, et notamment Bao Dai. Partagés entre la France et le Vietnam à partir de 1948, ce couple illustre s'est lié d'amitié avec les artistes vietnamiens Mai Trung Thu, Vu Cao Dam, Le Thi Luu et son époux Ngo The Tan.

The 42nd auction will be held on Thursday 7 March 2024. It will feature a selection of works representative of the revival of modern art in Vietnam at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as an overview of the techniques developed at the Indochina School of Fine Arts.

Marguerite, petite-nièce de Vu Cao Dam est ici peinte dans le jardin familial à Béziers vers 1951. Nous remercions Yannick Vu-Jakober pour son commentaire : "Pour moi il s'agit plutôt de ma petite cousine germaine Marguerite la fille aînée de ma cousine germaine Anna. À cette époque nous habitions dans des maisons voisines et mon cousin par alliance Do Dinh Can élevait des poules et poulets dans le jardin.  Elle était âgée d'environ cinq ans, tandis que j'avais 9 ans en 51."

Lương Xuân Nhị, born in Hanoi in 1914, occupies a major place in twentieth-century Vietnamese art. He uses a modernity that gives his production a character all its own. He studied at the Indochina School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1937. He was a member of the Société d'encouragement à l'art et à l'industrie, from which he received several awards. Along with artists To Ngoc Van, Tran Van Can, and Le Van De, he was also one of the founders of FARTA (Foyer de l'art annamite). From 1955 to 1981, he taught at the University of Fine Arts in Indochina.

Dans le jardin was part of a major turning point in the artist's career, and bears admirable witness to the painter's pictorial research, which was then undergoing a radical transformation. The painting reveals the syncretism of these various influences. Lê Phổ chose to keep silk as his support, a medium that is very difficult to master and allows no repentance. What's more, the artist uses a motif that is highly significant to his country. A young woman picking peach branches stands behind a mother and her son. This peaceful scene highlights the importance of this fruit tree in Vietnam. Originally symbolising immortality, the branches and flowers of the peach tree are now inseparable from the Tet festival, celebrating the Lunar New Year. Heralding the arrival of spring, they bring good luck and prosperity. For many people, they bring a new source of vitality, keeping household members in good health.
