EVENT: ASIAN ARTS
Thursday, December 14, 2023, 2:30 p.m., Neuilly-sur-Seine
On December 14, Aguttes will hold its final Asian Art sale of 2023. On this occasion, we will travel from the Himalayas to Japan, via Vietnam, culminating in China, through a beautiful selection of porcelain, textiles, jade, lacquerware, and objets d'art.
EXCEPTIONAL IMPERIAL ROBE FROM THE YONGZHENG PERIOD
During the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), court dress was an essential component of imperial power. It was highly codified, responding to the imperatives of representation and distinction of rank.
The robe we are presenting is a longpao (literally “dragon robe”), a semi-formal garment worn on important occasions at court. Only the emperor and his close family were allowed to wear nine five-clawed dragons on their clothing. The wearing of bright yellow (ming huang), a highly symbolic color, was a prerogative reserved solely for the emperor, empress, empress dowager, and first concubine. It is also interesting to note that its cut is that of a men's garment. These elements suggest that our robe was intended for Emperor Yongzheng himself.

RARE MING DYNASTY VASE FROM THE VICTOR SEGALEN COLLECTION
“See the world, and then [...] express your vision of the world.”
Victor Segalen
An astonishing traveler, Victor Segalen (1878-1919) never stopped exploring distant lands. He is known to have had a thousand lives: naval doctor, archaeologist-poet, novelist, sinologist. His stay in China from 1909 to 1914 gave rise to two major archaeological expeditions and numerous writings, including the essential collection of poems “Stèles.” Victor Segalen brought back paintings, jades, prints, and porcelains from his Chinese adventure. From this collection comes the rare Wanli period (1575-1620) wall vase that we are presenting at the December 14 sale.
