On 8 November, Aguttes will be selling the Maison Sémonville collection, designed and decorated by John Coury and Florent Maillard, architects and interior designers and founders of CM Studio Paris.
This former private mansion, located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, was built in 1630, shortly before the reign of Louis XIV. It was here that Charles-Louis Huguet de Montaran, Count, then Marquis de Sémonville (1759-1839), who gave his name to the place today, lived. A member of parliament, diplomat and French senator, the Marquis de Sémonville was also French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1792 to 1796.
The Marquis's travels to the Orient were a common thread for John Coury and Florent Maillard. The Allegory of the Orient painted by Jan Boeckhorst (1604-1668) and the suite of 92 prints representing the various nations of the Levant stand alongside the warm tones of the period painted ceiling and Versailles parquet flooring. These artworks will be presented at our upcoming auction dedicated to their collection.
The decorators and architects paid particular attention to the way in which the interior in this 17th-century building was arranged and decorated. A collection of objects dating from Antiquity to the present day was assembled over a period of five years to create an eclectic, harmonious whole, with a particular focus on the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
