For the first time, the entire contents of a cask of The Glendronach whisky will go under the auction hammer.

On 23 October, the Wines & Spirits department of Aguttes will be offering for sale in Neuilly-sur-Seine a single lot comprising 630 bottles from a single cask of single malt whisky, distilled in 1992 and carefully kept for 30 years in the cellars of this Highland distillery, one of the oldest in Scotland.

Since it was founded in 1826, when the first sherry and port casks were imported and used for maturing whisky, The Glendronach quickly assimilated this practice into its traditional production process, bringing originality and body to its single malts. This whisky is therefore the archetype of the formidable richness of the aromatic notes associated with sherry cask maturation, which has made The Glendronach famous and popular with connoisseurs the world over. As a single malt, but also as a single cask (not blended; it comes from a single cask, in which it has been aged), our whisky reveals the superb complexity of the aromas and the great finesse of the taste, obtained by marrying malt with oak, which in another life had been used to make a top-quality sherry wine (Oloroso).

Our lot is also a true reflection to time-honoured expertise, embodying the character of a Highland single malt with the utmost authenticity, and Glendronach's perfect mastery of this ageing technique. Exceptional quality, a natural reduction in alcohol content during maturation and three decades of maturation give it its unmistakeable personality. This is what led Rachel Barrie, master distiller for The Glendronach, to consider this whisky perfectly matured and ready to represent the brand in the four corners of the world.

It has been christened 'The One And Only 30 years old' for this reason, but also to commemorate the bicentenary of the Excise Act, the legislation published in 1823 which marked the birth of Scotch whisky by legalising its production and establishing its taxation by the British government. So 2023 marks the 200th anniversary of this milestone in the history of whisky as we know it today.
