Son and pupil of Emile François, known as "Ouchard Père", Emile Auguste Ouchard came from an illustrious family in the great tradition of French bow making.
The "Ouchard dynasty" rose to prominence through the work of Ouchard père and Ouchard fils. Jean-Claude and Bernard, sons of Emile Auguste, have continued the family legacy.
Born in Mirecourt in 1900, Emile Auguste Ouchard began his apprenticeship with his father, who worked in Eugène Cuniot-Hury's workshop. From 1922 onwards, he followed his father who decided to open his own workshop, thus beginning a period of collaboration between the two men. His style evolved and his work gradually distinguished itself from that of his father, becoming finer, rounder and more precise. Eugène Auguste then briefly took charge of the workshop before moving to Paris in 1940 to set up his own business at 54 rue de Rome. In 1942 he won a Grand Prix at the Paris Craftsmen's Exhibition, before moving to the United States in 1946, encouraged by Yehudi Menuhin, where he practised his art first in New York with Lazare Rudié and then in Chicago with Lewis and Sons. This period brought his work to international attention. He then returned to France, where he continued to produce until the end of his life.
His bows are among the finest examples of twentieth-century French bowmaking, and are highly prized by collectors and musicians alike, not least for their outstanding craftsmanship and remarkable balance.

Lot 72 of the forthcoming Quatuor Instruments and Bows sale is a very fine piece from the period when Emile Auguste worked with his father, and this cello bow is signed with his father's mark. The pernambuco stick is mounted on an ebony and silver frog with a Vuillaume slide. It is in excellent condition, with its original headplate and fittings. We are particularly pleased to present this remarkable example of this great Master's work and hope that it will appeal to both discerning collectors and the most demanding musicians.
