Creators of the 20th century

In September 1933, Vogue featured an article titled "Des Bijoux Nouveaux" with a photo of Elsa Schiaparelli, a fashion designer, wearing her own Belperron necklace. The necklace was described as "a necklace that is only a thread of black enamel buttoned by a diamond [...] whose supreme coquetry is an apparent return to primitive ages." The one presented today adopts the same form of a link that encircles the base of the neck, but it is adorned with turquoises. Belperron appreciated ornamental stones and did not hesitate to use turquoise to add color to her creations. The inspiration for this necklace, mentioned but not specified in this article, could be linked to the journey that Suzanne Belperron made in the fall of 1923 to explore the lands of the pharaohs. Egyptomania enchanted all domains of art at that time, and jewelry was no exception. The black enameled neckband could evoke the kohl that adorns the eyes of characters depicted in ancient Egyptian iconography. The use of turquoise creates an interesting contrast and brings a certain liveliness to this design. The white of the eye is adorned with diamonds that harmoniously complete the motif. Olivier Baroin, an expert, confides that she would have probably described it in these few words: "A touch of almost nothing! A truly divine jewel! My style is my signature." La Revue MON STYLE EST MA SIGNATURE En septembre 1933 Vogue illustre l’article « Des Bijoux Nouveaux » d’une photo d’Elsa Schiaparelli, créatrice de mode, portant son propre collier Belperron décrit comme un « collier qui n’est qu’un fil d’émail noir boutonné par un diamant […] dont la suprême coquetterie est un apparent retour aux âges primitifs ». Celui que nous présentons aujourd’hui adopte cette même forme de lien qui enlace la base du cou à la différence qu’il est orné de turquoises. Belperron appréciait les pierres ornementales et n’hésitait pas à employer la turquoise pour colorer ses créations. L’inspiration de ce collier qui est évoquée sans être précisée dans cet article pourrait avoir un lien avec le voyage que Suzanne Belperron fit à l’automne 1923 pour explorer les terres des pharaons. L'égyptomanie envoûtait alors tous les domaines de l'art et la joaillerie n'échappait pas à cet engouement. Le tour de cou émaillé de noir pourrait évoquer le khôl qui farde les yeux de personnages représentés dans l’iconographie égyptienne antique. L’emploi de la turquoise crée un contraste intéressant et apporte une certaine vivacité à ce design. Le blanc de l’œil est agrémenté de diamants qui complètent harmonieusement le motif. Olivier Baroin, expert nous confie qu’elle l’aurait certainement décrit par ces quelques mots : « Un brin de trois fois rien ! un bijou juste divin !
