PAUL GAUGUIN, FROM BRITTANY TO POLYNESIA
Unique drawings and caricatures by Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin was born in 1848 in Paris and died in 1903 in Polynesia. After a career as a stockbroker, he was guided by Camille Pissarro and produced his first impressionist paintings.

In early 1888, he moved to Brittany and joined the Pont-Aven school. It was there that he produced his famous painting La vision après le sermon, now exhibited at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. The Pont-Aven school was the artist's residence of the late 19th century.

Attracted by the Breton landscape and light, he made several stays in Le Pouldu, a small seaside resort in Brittany. First as a boarder at Gloanec's house, then finally at the house of the woman he nicknamed Marie-Poupée, Paul Gauguin reunited with his friends Paul Sérusier and Meijer De Haan. Together they spent long winter days painting directly on the walls. Marie Henry, her real name, was Meijer's mistress, which made Gauguin deeply jealous. He lived there for a year before leaving for Polynesia. She kept 25 paintings of the artist as a credential.

The drawings presented in the 47th Aristophil sale were made during this period. It is an extraordinary album of captioned drawings, real comic strips made by Paul Gauguin for the young French actor, playwright and scriptwriter Jacques Bousquet. On the title page, the names of two of the pioneer painters of the Pont-Aven School, great friends of Gauguin, Charles Laval (1861 - 1894) and Emile Jourdan (1860 - 1931), also appear. The drawings are mostly by the artist: caricatures, the story of a "gabier de mizaine and his tragic death on the island of Matapa", "interview with the Krokrodille", "interview with the Boâ", "the savages are the eye of the Boâ"...

You will be able to follow this incredible story during the 47th sale of the Aristophil collections, fine arts, graphic works and autographs, on Tuesday 5 April 2022.
