BODICE FRONTS, MASTERPIECES OF THE WOMEN'S TOILET

Bodice jewelry is one of the oldest pieces of jewellery to have been discovered by archaeological excavations. The fibulae, beyond their usefulness to tighten the sides of a garment, are often chiseled or decorated with stones to bring a distinctive touch to the outfit of the person who wears them.

Evolving to the rhythms of major artistic styles, bodice jewelry has alternately taken the form of bows, flowers, animals and geometric compositions. Composed of a decorative element and one or more pointed rods to fix them, brooches or clips are made to embellish the necklines of those who wear them and to attract particular attention.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, women's dresses were composed of a corset which was worn over a blouse called a corsage. The word "corsage" thus designates a garment but also this part of the body that it covers. The jewels worn on the front of the bosom are the "devant de corsage" and are similar to important brooches very elaborate.

On the occasion of our March 31, 2022 sale, we will have the pleasure to present you a lovely brooch forming a bodice front from the beginning of the 20th century, composed of a pompom held at the top by a knot, the whole set with diamonds.
