OLD MASTER : A SELECTION OF UNIQUE PIECES ON THE MARKET
The Old Master : Paintings and Drawings department of Aguttes will inaugurate its 2022 auction on March 25 at the Hôtel Drouot. Its return to the well-known auction house in the 9th arrondissement will be an opportunity to present a selection of works never before seen on the market and whose authors are among the greatest in artistic creation. Among the most beautiful discoveries to come:
L’Esprit Créateur
Known as Il Guercino from an early age because of his strabismus, this in no way prevented Le Guerchin (1591-1666) from developing his talents as a prodigious and prolific draftsman. A preparatory stage for a large altarpiece commissioned for a church in Turin, where it still stands today, the drawing is part of a known preparatory corpus of two other drawings, held by the Morgan Library in New York and the British Museum in London. Done in pen and wash, the dynamic lines reveal a groping for the ideal composition and betray an intensely alive and creative hand.

Les souvenirs de Farinelli à la cour d’Espagne
The second exceptional discovery among the Italian schools is the illustrated souvenirs of the castrato Farinelli (1705-1782) in a double composition presenting sumptuous opera sets in perspective. Each presenting a stage frame and an empty orchestra pit, the two images let the extras evolve in fabulous settings, one interior, the other exterior. Commissioned to Francesco Battaglioli (1722-1796) who had worked for Farinelli in Madrid, it is probable that the castrato wished to have, some time later, the representation of two scenes from La Nitteti, an opera that he himself supervised at the Spanish court. They appear today as extraordinary testimonies of grandiose performances, soon to be offered at auction.

In a completely different atmosphere, Christiaan Luyckx (1623-1657), a Flemish painter of the 17th century, plunges us into a cabinet of curiosities where various elements of vanity invite meditation. The eye of the enlightened amateur will be able to browse the composition and decipher with pleasure the symbols that are hidden there. Flattering his erudition and the perpetual quest to enrich his knowledge, some elements remain reminders of the transience of existence and the flight of the soul into the death that we all know.

An extraordinary discovery within the French School, the department will finally have the pleasure of presenting a Still Life with Strawberries, Cherries and Gooseberries by the artist Louyse Moillon (1609/1670-1696). A woman painter in the 17th century, she developed her artistic identity in the wake of the Flemish and Dutch still life tradition. From the darkness, the artist brings out the subjects of her study whose pure simplicity is underlined in the economy of colors and forms. A new work on the market, newly integrated into Louyse Moillon's corpus, it invites the aesthete to take the time to contemplate. There is perhaps all the poetry and discretion of his art.
