DESIGN: THE PETYT COLLECTION

A family collection of artworks by Maurice Daurat, created for the family of his main patron René Robard between 1927 and 1935.

Centerpieces in pewter, silver vases, or an Art Deco silver-plated and ivory flatware set, all of these pieces have only been exhibited once. They have remained in the same family since their creation: the Petyt family (Madeleine Robard, daughter of René, married Denis Petyt in 1928).

All the artworks are featured in Catherine Baumgartner's book "Maurice Daurat, Art Deco Goldsmith-Sculptor," which benefited from the family archives of Xavier Petyt for its writing.
Maurice Daurat (1880-1969) was a French goldsmith and metalworker born in Bordeaux. He studied at the Germain-Pilon School where he received a general education in the Fine Arts (painting, drawing, sculpture). After World War I, he definitively turned to sculpture and metalwork with a preference for goldsmithing and metalworking. He exhibited in various Salons and gained recognition during the 1925 Salon by winning a first prize. It was also there that he met his main patron and friend, René Robard. He created forms entirely crafted by hand and hammer. Although he used gold and silver, his preferred metal was pewter.
The art critic Martinie, in an article dedicated to modern Goldsmithing in "L'Art Vivant" in April 1931, wrote: "Daurat is to pewter what Puiforcat is to silver." On March 15th, we will present a collection of 8 pieces from the Petyt Family.
