In Lille, in the galleries of the Hospice Comtesse Museum, several violins and bows signed by Pierre Hel (1842–1902) and his son Joseph Hel (1865–1902) serve as a reminder of the city's important place in the history of French violin making. Preserved in the museum’s permanent collection, these instruments reflect the deep attachment of this family of luthiers to their region, as well as the high technical standards that defined their work. They bear witness both to the refinement of Lille's craftsmanship and to the significance of northern France in the history of the applied arts. Through these rare pieces, an entire facet of Lille’s musical life is brought back to life: the world of concerts, bourgeois salons, and major musical commissions from the late 19th century.
Established on rue Nationale as early as the 1860s, Pierre Hel chose to develop his business in Lille, even though Paris attracted most of the profession’s artisans. His son Joseph took over the workshop in the 1890s. Together, they helped bring recognition to the quality of Lille’s violin making far beyond regional borders. Their work, highly respected by musicians, was frequently praised at exhibitions and professional competitions of the time.
The Hel violins, influenced by the great Italian masters, are distinguished by their purity of line, meticulous finishes, and acoustic balance. Their mastery of varnish, careful selection of wood, and consistent craftsmanship reflect an exceptional level of precision. Their virtuosity was not showy — it was expressed through rigour and the steadiness of the hand.
