🍇 Les Vins de la Loire: Exceptional diversity in the heart of France and a real “niche” at auction.
The Loire Valley, often referred to as the “Garden of France”, is the cradle of a rich and varied viticulture.
Covering some 57,000 hectares, it is France's third-largest vineyard in terms of surface area, and the leading producer of AOC (appellation d'origine contrôlée) white wines.
Loire wines are characterized by the use of local and historic grape varieties, often vinified as “monocépage” wines:
• Muscadet: Derived from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, it is renowned for its freshness and minerality, particularly in the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire and Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu appellations.
• Chenin Blanc: Found in Anjou and Touraine, it offers a range of wines from dry to sweet, with remarkable ageing potential.
• Sauvignon Blanc: Mainly grown in the Centre-Loire region (Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé), it is appreciated for its citrus aromas and liveliness.
• Cabernet Franc: The emblematic grape of Loire reds, it is grown in Anjou, Saumur, Bourgueil and Chinon, producing fruity, elegant wines.
The diversity of terroirs in the Loire Valley, from the limestone soils of Sancerre to the schist of Anjou, gives our wines a unique aromatic richness.
This variety allows for a wide range of styles, from dry, mineral whites to full-bodied reds, fruity rosés and elegant sparkling wines.
Although Loire wines are rarer in our sales than those from other French regions, the most prized estates, highly sought-after by insiders, are plentiful and cover a wide variety of appellations, such as :
• in Savennières: the famous Clos de la Coulée de Serrant by the emblematic Nicolas Joly or Thibaud Boudignon's Clos de la Hutte.
• in Sancerre: the wines of François Cotat and his cousin Pascal, or Edmond Vatan's great Clos La Néore.
• in Saumur: the legendary Clos Rougeard or wines from Vincent Pinard, Domaine du Collier or Guiberteau whites.
• in Pouilly-Fumé: of course, the wines of Domaine Didier Dagueneau (now run by Louis-Benjamin) and its sometimes-rare vintages such as “Clos du Calvaire”, “Astéroïde” and “Maudit”.
• in Chinon: Charles Joguet's Clos de La Dioterie, for example, or the vintages of Domaine de la Noblaie.
