The 20th Century Decorative Arts & Design department of Maison Aguttes invites you to discover the fascinating world of Line Vautrin, an exceptional designer. This French artist, nicknamed the ‘poetess of metal’, left her mark on her era with her singular creativity tinged with intense poetry.
Born in Paris in 1913, Line Vautrin began creating objects at an early age. At the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques appliqués à la vie moderne, held in Paris in 1937, she had a stand displaying her creations, in particular gilded bronze objects such as compacts, boxes, ashtrays and necklaces, which combined the art of jewellery with that of sculpture. The great success of the exhibition led her to open her first boutique on rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, before finally moving to 106 rue Vieille du Temple.
In 1953, Line Vautrin developed a new technique, initially called ‘oforge’, which involved combining fragments of glass or mirror with a plastic binder, and registered a patent with the INPI for this revolutionary, extremely resistant resin, cellulose acetate, which she renamed ‘talosel’ in the late 1960s. It was a huge success, with her creations selling like hotcakes and even being used by leading interior designers such as Jean Royère in their own projects.
When she moved to 60 quai des Grands Augustins, her flat became a showroom, where she exhibited her famous witches' mirrors with their sparkling, poetic talosel frames, but the resin inlaid mirrors were also used on frames, lights, tables, chests, screens, etc. Vautrin also returned to jewellery, applying talosel to bracelets, necklaces, earrings and other brooches.
Line Vautrin's passion for design has been fuelled by a lifetime of challenges and experimentation, with works that blend symbolism with a touch of lyricism. Through these pieces, sought after today by the world's greatest collectors, Line Vautrin has created a unique universe, earning herself a place in the great History of the decorative arts of the 20th century.
