Meeting Three Exceptional Female Winemakers
Opinion Column by Pierre-Luc Nourry for Who's Who

In a wine industry traditionally dominated by men, these three women have earned a special place in the hearts of wine lovers. With unique careers and styles, each has contributed to redefining the standards of their appellation. Balancing tradition and modernity, they cultivate vines in remarkable locations and uphold wine as a cornerstone of the French art of living.

Muriel Giudicelli (Corsica)

Since 1997, Muriel Giudicelli has been working in one of Corsica’s most renowned wine regions, Patrimonio, at the foot of Cap Corse, near Saint-Florent. In the hills surrounding the village, where schist, granite, and clay-limestone soils meet, her journey began with the creation of a Muscat (petit grain) and has since expanded to include three colors: rosé, white, and red.
Her wines reveal remarkable complexity and rank among the finest in the AOC Patrimonio appellation. Native yeasts enhance the terroir, while biodynamic viticulture respects Corsica’s generous nature—an ecological and ethical approach that prioritizes living organisms. Minimal sulfur intervention allows her wines to truly reflect their environment, capturing the rich essence of northern Corsica.
Special mention for the AOC Patrimonio white, an intensely precise and long-lasting wine that evokes deep emotions.

Sandrine Farrugia (Lot-et-Garonne)

For over ten years, Sandrine Farrugia has cultivated four hectares of vines around Cocumont (Lot-et-Garonne) alongside her partner, fellow winemaker Elian Da Ros. A self-taught winemaker, her wines reflect her energy and unique talent, crafted with precision, balance, and elegance—both in the vineyards and the cellar. Her approach follows biodynamic principles, with minimal sulfur use.
Favorite pick: « 52 Ares », the estate’s first cuvée. This blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, grown on a small parcel and aged in barrels, offers exceptional freshness, floral and citrus aromas, and a pure yet intense palate. A true gem.

Isabel Ferrando (Vaucluse)

A former banker turned winemaker, Isabel Ferrando took over Domaine de Saint-Préfert in 2003, located south of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, between Orange and Avignon. She quickly established herself, producing three Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds that perfectly embody the generosity and radiance of this exceptional terroir, known for its warmth and outstanding drainage.
Her commitment to sustainable viticulture and dedication to quality have elevated her estate to a must-visit name in the appellation.
The rarest cuvée, "F601" (named after the vineyard parcel), has been produced since 2018 in just a few hundred bottles per year. Unlike the usual Grenache-dominated blends of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this 100% Cinsault wine is sourced from a unique plot with a complex geological structure—decomposed quartz sand, blue clay veins retaining moisture, and gravel-strewn soils, all characteristic of this legendary wine region.
