-CAZOTTE. *Le Diable amoureux*. Paris, Librairie des bibliophiles, 1883. 8vo, LXXVII–126 pp. with wide margins. Contemporary red morocco, spine with raised bands decorated with a gold-stamped dotted pattern, richly decorated panels with gilt metalwork, covers framed by three gilt fillets, endpapers edged with morocco leather adorned with multiple gilt fillets, linings and endpapers in red moiré satin, second endpaper in marbled paper, double gilt fillet on the headbands and fore-edges, cover and spine preserved, edges gilt on sample strips [Blanchetière]. Illustrated edition preceded by an introduction by Gérard de Nerval. The illustrations consist of seven plates drawn and engraved by Adolphe Lalauze, including a portrait of Cazotte as the frontispiece. A deluxe edition limited to 220 copies reprinted in 8vo format, and among these, one of the 20 on Whatman paper (no. 42; the third paper grade after 10 ‘Japon’ and 20 ‘Chine’), containing a second state of the engravings, prior to the letter. A fine copy in an original binding, perfectly executed by Blanchetière. Vicaire I, 590.

Red morocco, raised spine, title, author and volume number gilded, place and date stamped at the tail, ornamented panels, triple gilt fillet framing the panels and covers, inside covers edged in morocco leather decorated with gilt fillets, double gilt fillet on the edges and caps, linings and endpapers in garnet moiré silk, second endpaper in marbled paper, edges gilt on paper strips, cover and spine preserved [H. Blanchetière] (water stains in the margins of a few pages of vol. 2, yellowed paper, a few leaves browned). Edition illustrated with nine etchings by Adolphe Lalauze, including a portrait of the author as the frontispiece to vol. 1. Printed in a run of 220 numbered copies: one of the 170 on Holland paper (no. 169), enhanced with a pre-letter suite. Copy bound in an original, perfectly executed binding signed by Blanchetière.
