Memoirs of a favourite of His Royal Highness the Duke of Orléans. Leiden: published by Jean Sambix the Younger, 1668.

In-12, (4)-239 pp. 19th-century red morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, title, place and date in gold, richly decorated panels, covers framed by a set of 3 fillets and 4 angular fleurons, all in gold, double gilt fillet on the edges, guilloché caps, triple gilt fillet on the corners, gilt edges on marbled paper [Bauzonnet] (minor rubbing to the lower corners or on the covers, slight oxidation of the paper, a few pinholes).

First edition, in a round-bound volume, of this account by a soldier and favourite of Prince Gaston d’Orléans, known as the “Grand Monsieur”, son of Henry IV and younger brother of Louis XIII. Following the account of these “Memoirs”, in which the author appears to have played a fairly active role, the work is supplemented by a Collection of several documents serving to clarify these memoirs (pp. 113–198) and a Collection of several letters from the King and Monsieur concerning his departure from the kingdom (pp. 199–239) - Gaston did indeed take part in a conspiracy against Richelieu, which culminated in a marriage and an execution in 1626.

Printed by Ph. Vleugaert of Brussels, after Rahir. A fine copy, bound with finesse and elegance by Bauzonnet. Willems, 2041. Rahir, 3192.
