Regarding the legal proceedings against *Les Diaboliques*. ‘My dear comrade, your colleague, Mr Savary (from La Manche), would be only too happy (I know this) to join forces with you to persuade the Minister to drop my case. […] You have enlisted the help of our friend GAMBETTA – ardent in friendship as in politics and on whom we rely so much – have you not?” And he signs: “More than your comrade, now your friend, Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly”. [In January 1875, after Barbey agreed to withdraw his book from sale, the investigating judge dismissed the case.]
