[MÉRARD DE SAINT-JUST (Simon-Pierre)].
The Occasion and the Moment, or a collection of fleeting poems, by an unassuming amateur, who is not malicious but believes laughter to be good for one’s health. Published in Bonhomopolis by L’Ingénu, bookseller to the Académie de Quatre, under the sign of the Well-Plucked Harp, 1782 and for all time.
Four parts in one volume in small 16mo format, (2)-116-148-98-72 pp. 19th-century long-grain navy blue morocco, ribbed spine, richly decorated panels with perforated backgrounds, covers edged with a cold-stamped scroll and a gilt fillet, 4 large gilt filigree metal fittings at the corners, a central gilt filigree medallion, and a frame of small blind-stamped fleurons, gilt roulette with cut-outs and chases, pink satin endpapers and half-leather [R. P. Thouvenin] (spine slightly faded, slight rubbing to the corners and cut-outs, some sporadic foxing).
A rare, slim volume, printed in very small numbers. It was first published in 1771; subsequent editions date from 1782, and all are rare. Brunet (III, 1643) cites only one edition from that date, with a variant title and addressed to Didot the Elder.
The general title of the collection has not been preserved in this copy, perhaps addressed to the younger Jombert (as found in the BnF copy), or to Didot (according to Gay). A fine copy in a very elegant and delicate binding by Thouvenin, with all margins preserved (h 134 mm.). Gay, III, 440. GAUDRIOLE.
