4 volumes in-18, plates. 19th-century navy blue morocco, ribbed spine, title, volume number and date gilded, panels decorated with small gilded metalwork, triple gilded fillet edging the covers, double gilded fillet on the cap and cut-offs, interior lace, edges gilded on marbled paper [Chambolle-Duru] (very slight rubbing to the corners, upper cap of vol. 3 and upper corner of vol. 1, very few foxing spots).
First edition of this collection of 11 travel accounts. Each is followed by notes by Pierre de la Mésangère. It includes, in particular: Journey by Chapelle and Bachaumont; Journey through Languedoc and Provence by Le Franc de Pompignan; Journey by Fléchier in Auvergne; Journey by Gresset to La Flèche; Journey from Paris to Marseille via Burgundy and the Bourbonnais by Bérenger; Journey to the Grande Chartreuse; Journey from Paris to Limousin by La Fontaine… Illustrated with 30 plates and a vignette at the title of one account, engraved on copper by Bertaux, Le Mire, Gaucher, Duval, Du Parc Gaitte, Copia… after Cornille, Le Mire, Monnet, Malapeau, Villerey. This copy contains a plate not mentioned by Cohen, making a total of 31 plates, including the erotic plate opposite p. 66 in Volume 1.
