CHARTIER (Alain).

The Works of the late Master Alain Chartier, who in his lifetime served as secretary to the late King Charles VII. Newly printed, revised and corrected…. On sale in Paris… at Galliot Du Pré’s shop, 1529. In large 16mo format, (12)-CCCLXVI ff. (incorrectly numbered as CCCLX), [sign. a8-b4; a8-z8; &8; A8-Z8], title in red and black, early 20th-century brown morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, title, place and date gilded, double blind-stamped line framing the panels and covers, gilded line on the edges and caps, roulette and triple gilded line on the inside. [R. Aussourd] (title page tarnished, last leaf slightly faded and restored, slight foxing, stains in the margins of a few leaves).

A fine edition, the first of Alain Chartier’s works to be printed in round type. It was produced by Pierre Vidoue’s press and the text is a revised version of the 1526 edition. It is illustrated with six vignettes in medallions, some of which are repeated, and with initials on a dotted background, all wood-engraved in black. A fine copy in a binding perfectly executed by René Aussourd. Although slightly short at the top, this copy retains upper margins of 134 mm. An old, smudged annotation at the top of folio CXV. USTC 1046; Brunet I, 1813; Bibl. Aureliana 128, 782; Renouard III, 1968.
