Two volumes in-12, XVI pp., (4) ff., 406 pp. and (3) ff., 412 pp. 19th-century red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with a gold dotted pattern, author, title and volume number in gold, panels decorated with small ironwork, triple gold fillet framing the covers, double gold fillet on the headbands and footbands, interior lace, edges gilt on marbled paper [Cuzin; Maillard dor.] (jaws and foot caps slightly rubbed, repairs to the jaws, one of which is cracked at the foot).
First edition of Lesage’s translation, which took such liberties in its rendering that it can be regarded as an original work of fiction. The essence of this picaresque novel remains in this version, which was highly regarded. It is illustrated with a frontispiece and 16 copperplate engravings in black by Jean Baptiste Scotin.
