L.S. ‘A. Einstein’, Princeton, 7 April 1949, to Sammy GRONEMANN in Tel Aviv; 1 typewritten page, quarto size, on his letterhead and bearing his address; in German.

A letter in verse to the writer Sammy GRONEMANN (1875–1952), former editor of the Yiddish magazine *Schlemiel*, who practised as a lawyer in Tel Aviv. The letter consists of four quatrains: ‘What others often grieve over / You know how to take with humour, / For you simply thought / That God made us this way’… Free translation: What afflicts so many others, you know how to take with humour, for you simply think that God made us this way, He who takes His revenge through injustice. He Himself created the weaknesses to which we succumb defencelessly, in misery as in victory. Instead of judging with unyielding severity, you bring redemption through your 66210
