6 volumes in-8 on fine paper, partly on laid paper, with generous margins. Red half-morocco with small green vellum corners from the 19th century, spine with raised bands highlighted by a blind-stamped fillet, gilt panels, gilt title and volume number, date at the tail, gilt floral panels adorned with fleurons, dotted with stars and edged with a double fillet, all gilt, gilt head (some foxing or browning on certain quires or scattered throughout; marginal loss with minor damage to the text on pp. 259–60, repaired; tear without loss, restored in the margin on pp. 255–6 in vol. 6 and affecting the text on pp. 79–80 in vol. 4 and pp. 361–2 in vol. 5).
A fine, beautifully bound copy of the famous edition of Molière’s Complete Works, published by Bret in 1773. Includes a *Life of Molière* by Voltaire, supplemented by Bret. According to Graesse, the commentary is also by Voltaire. A fine edition illustrated with a frontispiece featuring the famous portrait of Molière engraved by Cathelin after P. Mignard, and 32 black etchings after Moreau the Younger, engraved by Helman, Duclos, Née, Simonet and others… Each title page is adorned with a vignette by Moreau, engraved by himself. The engravings remain fresh. ‘Moreau’s series of figures is one of the most highly regarded’ (Cohen). Not listed in Graesse, who mentions only an edition from 1805 (pp. 563).
