Small 12mo, (46)-286 pp. 19th-century fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with small iron-stamped panels and highlighted with dotted lines and gilt fillets, red morocco title label, gilt title, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt edges, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt lace on the half-leather [Thierry Sr de Petit-Simier] (slight scuffing to the caps and corners, upper edges very slightly tarnished, a few scattered tiny pinholes).
From the library of Baron de Fleury, with an engraved bookplate bearing the coat of arms on the front flyleaf. 18th-century handwritten bookplate on the title page: Virvoude (s/l?) fils, 29 Floréal, Year 6.
Not present in Tchemerzine.
A fine copy of this second edition, published the year after the first. The philosopher’s last work to be published during his lifetime. As part of a joint edition with other booksellers, this Guinard edition is the rarest (only three copies in the CCFr). In a fine, elegant binding by Thierry, the successor to Petit-Simier.
