Turin, 23 January 1859 (the letter was dictated to his secretary, with a handwritten postscript); he is making preparations for his wedding (30 January) to CLOTILDE OF SAVOY. Mathilde is in charge of the trousseau: ‘the sum of one hundred thousand francs must be spent’... He would like Mathilde to come and welcome the couple in Marseille: “I would like you to be the first person your sister-in-law sees upon arriving on French soil. She is truly very kind without being beautiful, has an excellent character, great poise, and already loves you, from what I have told her, like a dear sister”… A maid and two dressmakers would need to be found for her: “I am bringing a Princess from a distinguished family, though somewhat country-bred, […] I would like her to make a good impression on the Parisian public from the very first days”… He speaks of their anniversary, of leave and tickets for an inauguration, of “diamond palms”, of the Walewski ball; he must accompany the Emperor to the countryside; he asks Mathilde to be godmother to his aide-de-camp’s daughter… A telegram is enclosed, Turin, 30 January 1859: “As soon as the wedding ceremony is over, I want to tell you myself and come and kiss you and my wife.”
