Small 12mo, (11) leaves, 343 pp., (1) f. 19th-century pine-coloured morocco, raised spine, title, place and date in gold, richly decorated panels, triple gilt fillet edging the covers, interior lace, gilt edges [Capé] (top and bottom edges slightly rubbed, foxing).
A. Renaud, liqueur maker in Lyon (1825–1897; engraved bookplate). Dorbon, 2753, ‘An extremely rare and highly curious work’. Guaita, 1558.
A rare first edition of this curious work, the second and final one published by the author following a short *Description of the Great Waterfalls of the Royal House of Saint-Cloud*, which appeared in 1706. A text frequently cited and sought after by enthusiasts of alchemy and the occult sciences. Chapter XXII presents Arnaud de Villeneuve’s [c. 1240–1311] ‘Method for “performing the great work of rejuvenation”’. Caillet provides a different collation of the introductory folios; this copy conforms to that held by the BnF, catalogue number 30830448, which has been digitised; a blank folio is likely missing at the end here (Caillet, 6782). A fine copy, perfectly prepared by Capé.
