2 parts in 1 volume, in-12 format, in an in-18 binding. 19th-century red morocco, spine with raised raised bands, author, title, place and date gilded, panels decorated with small ironwork and edged with a double gilded line, covers decorated in the Duseuil style, double gilded line on the edges, guilloché caps, interior lace, edges gilded on marbled paper [Dupré] (slight rubbing on the caps and tail edges, margins cut short, touching the edges of the front and 5 plates, stain on the title of the second part).
A rare early edition of what is considered to be the very first picaresque novel.
No copy in the CCFr.
Long attributed to Diego Hurtado de Mendoza (1503–1575), it was first published in 1554 in Burgos and translated into French in 1560 by Garnier de Laval.
A lovely edition illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and 19 full-page black copperplate engravings, some signed by J. Harrewyn.
A fine copy in a luxurious morocco binding signed by Dupré.
