APULEIUS.

Apuleius. *The Golden Ass*, Book XI, translated into French by J. Louveau of Orléans and arranged into chapters and summaries with a table of contents at the end. In addition, there are 32 octaves on Books 4, 5 and 6, dealing with the love of Cupid and Psyche…

In Paris, by Claude Micard, 1570.

Small 16mo, (8) ff., 409 pp., (10) ff. (out of 11). Contemporary glazed brown calfskin, ribbed and blank spine, cold-stamped fillet on the ribs and as borders on the covers, cold-stamped fleur-de-lis medallion on each cover (restored binding, the original cover reattached to the modern binding, old stains on the covers with ink markings; title page burnished, soiling on a few pages, defects including discolouration, and a stain on pages 309–320; missing the final blank leaf).

A very rare first Parisian edition of this translation by Jean Louveau, originally published in Lyon in 1553. In addition to Apuleius’s text, it contains a charming work by Jean Maugin, a poet from Angers, concerning the love story of Cupid and Psyche.

The illustrations consist of some thirty woodcut vignettes that were long attributed to Bernard Salomon. The title is set within a woodcut frame.

[Signatures A-Z8, Aa-Dd8, Ee7 (of 8)]. Old signature and a crossed-out note in the margin of the title page.

USTC 39443 lists only the two copies held at the BnF. Brunet I, 367.
