Navy blue morocco, ribbed spine decorated with a gold fillet, title and author’s name in gold, double framing of multiple gold fillets on the panels and covers, double gold fillet on the head and foot caps, endpapers edged with morocco decorated with six gold fillets, gilt edges, covers and spine preserved [Chambolle Duru] (spine faded; raised bands, one of the panels, top cap and two corners slightly rubbed).
An illustrated edition featuring a portrait and 42 compositions by the painter and caricaturist Louis-Ernest Lesage (1847–1919), known as Sahib, wood-engraved by Prunaire. A limited edition of 200 copies on large, re-imposed in-8 paper: one of the 50 first-edition copies on white Japanese paper (no. 27).
A unique copy enriched with a set of all the illustrations (except one vignette on p. 218) in their first state on fine paper, and 46 original ink drawings, signed by the artist, either ‘Sahib’ or ‘S’, and placed opposite the
engraved plates; that is to say, all the illustrations including those on the cover, except for the one on the spine and the vignette on p. 218.
