He received a visit from a young lady (her name has been scratched out): ‘Thank you for sending her to me, as she has given me some useful information. But I would very much like to know a little more about her. She seems very independent. What is her family background? How did she come to Paris? Had she made a misstep in Etampes? [...] I need to get a feel for this young lady’… [A landscape painter and friend of Pissarro and Cézanne, Édouard BÉLIARD (1832–1912) worked alongside them in Pontoise from 1872 onwards, and took part in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. A regular at the Café Guerbois, like Zola, he inspired the latter to create the character of the failed painter Gagnière in *L’Œuvre* (1886).]
