28 August 1953, in reply to a letter from Mathilde Kottmann: ‘I thank you most sincerely, on behalf of everyone, for the wonderful gift you have given us by sending us your beautiful magazine!’… – 2 January 1955, he apologises for not having sent the requested ‘excerpts from philosophical works’: “I was so tired and had to prepare the speech on the problem of peace in our time for Oslo”… – 28 April 1958, a postcard showing the hospital landing stage, with thanks for *Plaisir de France*, “which I always read with great interest and benefit”… – 14 December 1960, he is moved by Quéant’s article [on *At the Edge of the Virgin Forest. My Life and Thoughts*]: “I had no desire to write my autobiography. Other work kept me busy”… He explains how his “tyrannical” publisher and two helpful doctors persuaded him to write the book. Then “I realised that it gave me the opportunity to talk about the studies that occupied me and the philosophical and religious thoughts that were close to my heart. I still felt so young at 58!”… – 27 November 1962, following a letter from Mathilde Kottmann announcing the dispatch of an object carved from Gabonese soft stone, Schweitzer reiterates how touched he is to still receive Plaisir de France. “Alas, it will soon be four years since I was last in France”… View of the Lambaréné hospital, with a dedication (29 August 1953); two photographs, signed and annotated: “In a pirogue on the Ogasné”, and “at my desk”.
