2 volumes, large 8vo. (23)-191-(12) pp. and (31)-264 pp., frontispieces, numerous illustrations (large plates, vignettes and tailpieces), headpieces and initials. Slightly later red morocco binding (late 18th century), smooth spine decorated with gilt panels featuring small ironwork, gilt scrolls, title and volume number in navy morocco, gilt title, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt edges, gilt scrolls on the edges and endpapers, marbled paper endpapers (very slight fading on the endpapers, slight oxidation, a few very small scuff marks on the covers and the upper joint at the top of volume I, 2 very small wormholes in the joint of volume II, of no consequence).
A gilt bookplate on a piece of red leather by Jules Janin.
A volume entirely engraved in etching and printed on heavy laid paper. Second printing, from the same period as the original, with the corrected note on page 108. A fine copy with full margins, beautifully bound by François-Paul Bradel (c. 1757–1827), active between 1770 and 1795, with his engraved label ‘Bradel le jeune’. ‘A highly sought-after work’, Cohen-Ricci, 497.
