Regarding his play *Le Marquis de Villemer* (premiered at the Odéon on 29 February 1864): ‘My dear colleague, you have praised and encouraged *Villemer*; please encourage the artists who are performing it once more and who have brought great literary brilliance to this revival of the play. One of them, Laroche, was also your actor, and you know he has a serious, genuine talent. Finally, if you have not already done so – for deep in my village I only learn of things very late – please offer a word of encouragement to the Odéon and to me, who have taken great care with this revival.
