New Fables, and Other Poems.

Paris: Claude Barbin, 1671.

In-12, [12] pp., 184 pp. 19th-century red morocco, ribbed spine, title and date in gold, panels decorated with small ironwork, double gold fillet on the spine, cut-outs and caps, triple gold fillet framing the covers, gold roulettes and fillet inside, edges gilt on marbled paper [Trautz-Bauzonnet] (top cap and upper clasp slightly rubbed, very slight traces of dust on the title).

A rare and significant edition, partly in its original form. It contains eight fables appearing here for the first time: *The Lion, the Wolf and the Fox*, *The Coach and the Fly*, *The Treasure and the Two Men*, *The Rat and the Oyster*, *The Monkey and the Cat*, *The Ear of Corn and the Pumpkin*, *The Kite and the Nightingale*, and *The Oyster and the Litigants*. Published jointly by two Parisian booksellers, Denys Thierry and Claude Barbin, it also contains *Le Songe de Vaux* or various poems (ballads, odes) and *L’Adonis*, pp. 147–184, a poem dedicated to Fouquet, his patron, for whom he took sides against the King, here in the first reprint of the original 1669 edition. Illustrated with 8 beautiful half-page etchings in black, finely executed by François Chauveau (monogram F. C., engraved in the image) for the 8 new fables, having previously produced the 118 vignettes for the first edition of 1668.

A fine copy in a delicate binding by Trautz-Bauzonnet. Rochambeau, pp. 7, no. 10. Tchemerzine VI, 384.
