A fine reflection on the art of acting, probably for a talk. ‘No other profession, no other art has ever been the subject of as much discussion as the art of acting. […] The truth is that one must be born an actor. It is a true gift… one cannot acquire it! One can learn the craft of acting, but one cannot learn to act. […] if acting is a profession… it is a profession of faith! […] that sacred fire… but, above all: vocation! And when I speak to you of the book a great actor might write on the art of acting, I am not in a bad position to speak of it, since I am the son of the greatest actor who has undoubtedly ever lived.” And Guitry quotes his father, Lucien GUITRY, to conclude: “There is no technique in this prodigious craft of acting… You start from scratch with every new play… It is a craft one teaches oneself… that cannot be taught to others… and in which there is an element of immediate improvisation… on stage… unpredictable…”
