Illustrations by C. N. Cochin for the Italian edition of Tasso’s *Jerusalem Delivered*. Paris: Ambroise Didot, 1784. Small quarto, contemporary grained fawn calfskin, smooth spine with decorative lettering, burgundy title label, gilt scrolls and double gilt bands framing the covers, gilt scrolls on the edges and the headband, edges yellow marbled with red. Handwritten title page, 41 plates. A fine set comprising a frontispiece and 40 plates engraved with a burin after Nicolas Cochin by Saint Aubin, Dambrun, Lingée, Ponce, Prevost, Varin, Tilliard, Simonet and others… It is accompanied by a handwritten title page in blue and red. Bits, headgear and helmets slightly rubbed, a tear at one corner, minor marginal foxing.

The first off-print of the superb illustrations accompanying this edition of the Italian master’s work.

This series was printed in only two editions, each limited to 200 copies, of which the French-language edition (our copy, from 1784) is the original.

The second edition was distinguished by the Italian text (published in 1785–1786).

A very fine illustrated title by Didot in its period binding.

Finely executed, comprising a frontispiece and 40 black-and-white plates after (Charles-)Nicolas Cochin (1610–1686), a 17th-century draughtsman and engraver and follower of Jacques Callot; they were engraved by Saint-Aubin, Dambrun, Lingée, Ponce, Prevost, Varin, Tilliard, Simonet…

“A book produced with great luxury (in a run of 200 copies, it is said) thanks to the support of the Count of Provence, who paid for the drawings from Cochin”, Cohen-Ricci, 976–977.
