2 volumes in small square folio format, (2)-VII-282-(2) pp. and (1)-334 pp., black etchings including a large engraved vignette on the title page. 19th-century turquoise morocco, signed on the lower spine and on one endpaper, double endpapers of marbled paper in a swirl pattern, gilt head, triple border of gilt fillets alternating with garlands of foliage or motifs, ribbed spine decorated with gilt floral panels, gilt title and volume number, guilloché caps [Gruel] (spine very slightly faded, very faint stains on the covers, title and half-title of Volume II missing, very slight foxing or scattered stains on the sides, some foxing on the edges).
A copy with full margins on vellum paper, occasionally interleaved with blank leaves.
In a superb morocco binding by Gruel.
Complete with the set of 20 illustrations by Fragonard, Monnet and Touzé in fine proofs, including 3 preceding the numbered plates: La Joconde, Le Baiser rendu and La Fiancée du Roi de Garde.
Famous edition of the Contes, intended at the time to rival that of the Fermiers généraux and delicately adorned with Fragonard’s light charm (except for three, which are by Monnet and Touzé).
