Hugo expresses his gratitude for the fine review in the November issue of *La Revue internationale*: ‘I sense in this elegant commentary the powerful breath of the thinker; you write criticism, sir, with a philosopher’s torch in hand, and before telling the reader: “judge”, you say to him: “understand”. Hence the loftiness of your insights, hence the rare gift you possess: depth full of light. I thank you for commenting on La Légende des siècles with such generous and serene elevation. You are right to say that I love young people, and you are right to say that I am young myself. My head covered with grey hair proves nothing against my heart full of faith. […] Yes, I live more in the future than in the present, and in that respect (though an old man in so many other ways) I am a child. […] you are already, and will increasingly become, one of the standard-bearers of this young generation called to such lofty destinies"...
