‘Thank you, my dear old friend. Dr [Devouges’ notes on horticulture, for *Bouvard and Pécuchet*] are excellent. I’m always keen for more of that sort of thing. So I’m eagerly awaiting the next instalment. I’ve been feeling very unwell this week. Apparently it was my gallbladder. Today, I’m feeling a bit better. I’m leaving for Paris tomorrow; ZOLA’s premiere [Les Héritiers Rabourdin] is on Friday the 4th. Mille 25 [nickname of Émile Weinscchenk, director of the Théâtre de Cluny] wants to give me Frédéric Lemaître. I think it’s a bad idea. The same Weinschenk told me this morning that *Le Sexe faible* [by Louis Bouilhet] will start rehearsals in a fortnight. – I’ll be back here on Saturday evening"... Correspondence (Pléiade), vol. IV, p. 881.
