The Life of Father Paul [Sarpi] of the Order of the Servants of the Virgin and theologian of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, translated from the Italian by F. G. C. A. P. D. B. Leiden: John Elzevier, 1661.

In-12 in in-18 format, (12) leaves (the first blank), 391 pp., (2) leaves (the last blank). Garnet-coloured Russian leather, smooth spine richly decorated with small perforated ironwork and fillets, all gilded, gilded title, ca, framing on the covers consisting of a gilded scroll bordered by a double gilded fillet, fleurons at the corners, dotted edge and decorated with small gilded ironwork, inner scroll, 2 vellum leaves inserted between the endpapers, gilded edges [Courteval] (slight rubbing to the edges and corners).

First edition of the French translation by François de Graverol of this *Life of Father Paul Sarpi*, written by his disciple F. Micanzio (1570–1654), an Italian monk of the Servite Order.

A copy beautifully bound in the early 19th century by Courteval, who worked in Paris from 1796 to 1836 and was one of the leading bookbinders of his time.

Whilst he was appreciated for his decorative styles reminiscent of Bozérian’s, he was also one of the first to employ leather embossing, a technique that became widespread in the 1830s and which can be seen on this copy (long grain). The bookbinder’s printed label is on a flyleaf.

"Courteval was, in his day, much what Thouvenin is today; if Thouvenin surpasses all his contemporaries, Courteval surpassed almost all of his" (Lesné, Reliure, didactic poem, p.119).
