From *The Lives of the Twelve Caesars*. Translated by George de La Boutière…

Paris: Claude Micard, 1569.

In-16, (6) leaves, 419 pp. (39) leaves. Imitation ivory vellum, spine with four raised bands, handwritten title and date, gilt edges (title and margins slightly browned).

A rare first Parisian edition, following the second edition published in Lyon by Jean de Tournes in the same year in quarto format; the first edition had been published by de Tournes in 1556. This new translation is by George de La Bouthière, who had already made a name for himself with a translation of Apuleius’s The Golden Ass in 1553 and Polydorus Virgil’s Three Dialogues in 1558. The edition appears to have been shared between the Parisian booksellers Cl. Micard and Simon Calvarin. Illustrated with portraits in wood-engraved medallions—that of the author on the title page, and those of the 12 emperors (one at the head of each book)—initials, and a title frame, also wood-engraved. Signed A-Z8; &8; Aa-Zz8; Aaa-Lll8. USTC 62075 for Micard, 4 copies, and 36014 for Calvarin, 1 copy.
