Glazed fawn calfskin from the second half of the 17th century, spine with five raised bands, red title label, gilt fillet, gilt scrolls and small gilt ironwork on the spine, cold-stamped fillet framing the covers, gilt scrolls on the edges, red edges, minor repairs (edges rubbed at the bottom, minor defects to the covers, slight rubbing on the covers, title and final leaves browned, foxing, a corner in the margin on pp. 17–18 replaced, small marginal tear on p. 179, margin trimmed and a few letters missing on p. 225).
First edition of this translation by Philippe de Maldeghem (1547–1611), a soldier and poet from Flanders.
The edition contains: a preface and a verse epistle by the translator, pieces in Latin and French verse addressed to the translator, the epitaphs of Petrarch and Laura, the life of Petrarch according to Vellutello, and a note on Laura, according to Gesualdo; there is a short introduction preceding the *Triumphs*, which are followed by the translation of the “Giunta” from the Aldine editions. It is illustrated with a portrait of Petrarch and Laura, in a half-page medallion, engraved in black on wood. USTC 7523. Desgraves IV, 187.
