Family correspondence from his time as musical director in Aachen. The letters, tender and affectionate, are addressed to his parents, Ernst von Karajan (1868–1951) and Martha von Karajan, née Kosmac. In November 1935, he was busy fitting out his house; he rehearsed his magnificent Requiem concert with a choir of 350 people. In February 1936, back from Berlin and Hamburg, he prepared for the performance of Figaro, the next concert, and the tour of Sweden. In March, he spoke of his concert with the cellist Gaspar Cassado, who played admirably. In April, after his Mozart concert, he left for Brussels. In May, he prepared with his orchestra for the Cologne concert: Beethoven (Egmont and the 3rd Piano Concerto) and Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony; then came the Rheingold…
