[Edward L. Bernays (1891–1995), Freud’s nephew on his father’s side (whose sister married Freud) and on his mother’s side (Anna Freud, Sigmund’s sister), enjoyed a brilliant career as a publicist in America; he is regarded as the father of political propaganda. He managed Freud’s American rights.] Freud thanks Edward for his telegrams and for a copy of the Jewish Tribune, a newspaper whose editor has shown remarkable Jewish audacity (‘die sich in ihrem Leader ein glänzendes Beispiel von jüdischer Chuzbe geleistet hat’). He has cashed the cheque for $600 and handed the sum over to Alexander, who distributes the funds to the family. The funds will therefore last until the end of the year, and Freud is now free of all debt, except for $10. He reproaches Edward for having used the Union Bank, with which he has no connection, and hopes that the royalties due from Boni & Liveright for the first half of the year will be paid into his account in London at the Anglo-Austrian Bank Ltd. As for the publication of his short lectures, which Boni & Liveright wished to publish, it was difficult for him to sort this out from here. He wrote to Dr RANK to tell him that he could do as he pleased, and he hopes that this has been sorted out one way or another. (“The matter of my short lectures, which Boni & Liveright wished to publish, was difficult for me to decide from here. I have written to Dr Rank that he may do as he pleases, and I hope the matter has now been settled in some way.”) Finally, he mentions his niece Judith’s behaviour and situation: “It seemed unnecessary to write to you with further details about Judith’s behaviour, as I have heard nothing further from them regarding their financial situation. Business conditions are currently very dire here, and so her husband will probably feel the pinch too”….
