His family of yesterday, his family of today’, Histoire des sciences médicales, vol. XXXIII, no. 3, 1999.
A valuable family collection containing two extremely rare documents relating to Ambroise Paré, one of which is annotated by him and is the only known autograph by the great surgeon.
All these documents relating to Ambroise Paré and his descendants, the Le Charrons, have been mounted on tabs without regard to chronology; we indicate their position in the volume in brackets.

Commenting on this document, Le Paulmier wrote: ‘We know that, with the exception of his signature, no autograph of the great surgeon is known. We have had the rare good fortune to discover a specimen of his handwriting” (p. 24); and “This is the only autograph of the great surgeon that we know of” (p. 146). Ambroise Paré is referred to as “master barber-surgeon in this city of Paris”. Jeanne Mazelin brings as her dowry ‘the sum of six hundred livres tournois together with the bridal garments’, whilst Paré endows his future wife with the sum of 200 livres. ‘And the said Jeanne Mazelin shall have and take, by right of priority and before any inventory is made or division taken, all the garments, rings and jewels that she shall have in her possession on the day of the death of the said Ambroise Paré, her future husband; likewise, the said Ambroise Paré shall have and take by right of priority all his garments, rings and surgical instruments that he shall have on the day of the death of the said Jeanne Mazelin”… (78)
