Autograph manuscript signed ‘Paul Fort’, *Ballades de la Mer, des Ports et des Rivages*, [1896]; 27 pages, quarto (edges slightly frayed on the first and twenty-seventh pages).
A carefully calligraphed manuscript for Albert SAMAIN, with the following dedication on the title page: ‘To Albert Samain, as a token of admiration and unwavering friendship. Paul Fort’. These Ballades were included in the third volume of the Ballades series (Éditions du Livre d’art et de l’Épreuve, 1896); they are numbered from I to XXV. Here is the opening of the first: “There is no sea, there is no sky, there is only a beautiful blue wall enlivened by the wings of bright butterflies, where bindweed barely stirs”… And the end of the last: “It is only at the edge of the sky that your storms wear themselves out, beyond the clouds, in the quivering azure; it is only at the heart of the sky, where the planets dream, that your revolutions take shape and find their order”.
