Edward Clive (1754–1839), British politician and 1st Earl of Powis (armorial bookplate). Autograph dated 18(8)9.

USTC 24377. Baudrier IX, 248.

A rare first illustrated edition of the new translation by Antoine Le Maçon (c. 1500–1559), advisor to the king and private secretary to Marguerite of Navarre (the text was first published in 1545). Drawing directly on the Italian original, Le Maçon’s version surpasses in precision and subtlety the only translation available at the time (by Laurent de Premier, based on a Latin text). The illustrations include a woodcut portrait of Boccaccio in black on the verso of the title page, and 10 woodcut vignettes in black – one at the head of each day – based on the compositions of the painter and engraver Pierre Eskrich, known as Pierre Vase. Adorned with wood-engraved headbands, footers and initials, this edition was the subject of particular typographical care, so much so that it was praised by Baudrier as ‘one of the masterpieces of 16th-century Lyon printing’. " Sixteen leaves are missing from the end of this copy, including one blank page, but the text itself is complete.
