2 volumes in-4, (8)-155-(5) pp. and (8)-123-(6) pp. Modern purple morocco, spine with 4 raised raised bands decorated with gold dots, author, title and volume number in gold, place and date stamped at the bottom, compartments decorated with gilt irons and double gilt fillets, triple gilt fillet framing the covers and double gilt fillet on the headbands and footbands, fawn morocco lining decorated with a scattering of gilt satyrs on mosaic medallions, gilded irons in the spandrels, double endpapers of violet moiré satin and marbled paper, gilded edges on uncut edges, headbands restored at the top [H. Blanchetière] (spine faded to fawn, headbands rubbed in places, lower headband of vol. 2 cracked, a very small hole affecting two letters on p. 155 of vol. 1).
A fine copy in a delicate original binding by Blanchetière, with endpapers featuring a design of satyrs that perfectly captures the spirit of the text. Illustrated edition featuring 33 etchings by Sylvain Sauvage, produced in collaboration with E. Feltesse; including 10 full-page plates, a half-title page, a title page, and 3 plates in each volume, as well as 23 vignettes within the text, comprising 12 headpieces and 11 full-page illustrations. Limited edition of 543 copies. One of 75 copies on Auvergne vellum, reprinted in in-4 crown format (no. XXXIX). With colour engravings, registered, and containing a black-and-white suite and 66 plates of colour breakdowns.
