SINO-HÉRÉKÉ silk carpet (silk warp, weft and velvet) Western Turkey, around 1920 3.15 x 2.00 m Good condition "Héréké is a small town in Turkey on the shores of the Gulf of Izmit. In 1844, when the Ottomans had to abandon Egypt, they transferred the major manufacturing trades from Cairo to Héréké. Héréké, closer to Istanbul, seemed the ideal place to continue Cairo's own textile tradition, namely superb carpets for the local aristocracy or European ambassadors. Indeed, a year earlier, in 1843, a very large silk spinning mill, the Imperial Silk Factory, was inaugurated in Héréké. From the beginning Hereke carpets were considered as prestigious pieces for their finesse of execution and the quality of the material used, silk and precious metal yarns. The silk yarn used for the entire carpet provided exceptional knotting fineness." The carpet is adorned with a polychrome floral central medallion, extended by two pendants on an ivory background enhanced with an elegant stylized polychrome floral decoration. The main border of the tobacco with a garland of multicoloured flowers is framed by two counter-edges. Bibliography Sabahi, T "Splendours des tapis d'Orient", Atlas edition, p.211.
