ROYAL TRAVEL CHEST WITH THE ARMS OF MARIE-THÉRÈSE ANTOINETTE RAPHAËLLE DE BOURBON (1726-1746), INFANTA OF SPAIN THEN FIRST DAUPHINE OF FRANCE.
Wooden core entirely covered with brown-red morocco gilded with small irons. The domed lid is decorated in its centre with the arms of Maria Theresa of Spain. At the corners, two dolphins and two towers with closed royal crowns are struck alternately in a circle of palms. A decoration of rich frames is present on each of the five sides, composed of a wide frieze of laurel and acanthus leaves in roll, highlighted by friezes of lilies and flowers. Lock plates in gilded brass, engraved with interlacing and flowers, drooping side handles and closing hooks.
Inside decorated with sky blue moire.
The base, later in natural walnut and gilded walnut in the Louis XVI style, comes from L.
Gouverneur, Manufacturer of furniture, display cases and silverware chest located formerly at 37, quai de l'Horloge, for which we have an invoice dating from 1910.

By its heraldic motifs, this precious chest designed for carriage travel, would have belonged to Marie-Thérèse of Spain (1726- 1746), daughter of Philippe V of Spain (grandson of Louis XIV), during her short presence at the court of France. His marriage to the dolphin Louis-Ferdinand, son of Louis XV (and future father of Louis XVI) thus marked the reconciliation between France and Spain.
Chests and boxes of this type were regularly delivered to the princesses of the royal family. Our chest was most probably made at the Menus plaisirs by one of the great trunk makers of the period: Padeloup, Derôme, Pierre Vente or Antoine Lauson...
